the inside story on the plastic ballwinder

It's the model almost every yarn store has, and the
key word here is
PLASTIC.  It's a wonderful machine.
Ballwinders can last just about forever as long as we do
not attempt to make them exceed their capabilities.

Too much tension between the swift and the ballwinder is
responsible for broken teeth (pictured).
Too much tension is created by:  winding too fast (too
much yarn weight on the swift or on the ballwinder for the
speed/force used), yarn has tangled within the hank or an
end has tangled around the swift base.
Also removing accumulated fiber-bunnies inside ballwinder
will prolong its life.  (CB will show you how to take it apart
and put it back together)

The ballwinder will "bark" or crackle when there's too much
tension.
THIS IS A WARNING TO STOP OR SLOW DOWN
One or two barks, you may not have broken anything.
Successive barks and you're probably losing teeth.
Keys to long life:  Arrange yarn on the swift so it will wind off
without crossing over, start slowly then increase speed,
stop or slow down to diagnose problems, slow down at the
end of hank (when weight is all on ballwinder).

Our models are made to show you the yarn's hand, weight, finish,
stitch capability, drape, how the variegated colors work etc.

Patterns are generally available for models made by our vendors.
There are not always exact patterns for store made models,
because we don't always use the called-for yarn.

(CB  will often and most likely enhance a pattern design or change structural components
for fit or knitting ease.    Also, The Sweater Wizard is our friend.  It's a program that will give you
a basic layout for a garment, with which you can create your own design using trims, stitch patterns
color, shaping options etc.
YOU MUST HAVE A GAUGE SWATCH AND PROVIDE CORRECT MEASUREMENTS FOR
A SWEATER WIZARD pattern TO FIT.
Try it out at the store and if you love it we can order one for you!)

SUSTAINABLE.  Sustainable is a very good thing, but it just means that the
fiber grows back quickly, and is probably not organic nor necessarily eco.  For instance,
there are at least two ways to process bamboo.  Really toxic substance route (traditional)
and a heat treated route (the heat route is catching on).
We'd like to think that all of our manufacturers are conscientious, and chances are there
are more of them now than there were before.

AIR TRAVEL?  Look up www.tsa.dot.gov website for most current USA information on airline security and knitting needles.  It may be handy to copy TSA's list and take it with you.  European and other international airports may have additional restrictions; you have to check with the specific airline for those destinations.
DON'T TAKE YOUR TURBOS THROUGH AMSTERDAM, for example.
